Overview

Both in Australia and internationally, strong primary health care systems are increasingly understood as essential to tackling the challenges facing health care. In Victoria, these challenges include:

  • The needs of an ageing population.
  • The increase of chronic and complex conditions and avoidable hospital admissions.
  • The rising costs of technology and the health system.
  • The widening health inequalities.
  • Meeting consumer expectations for the right care at the right time, close to home.
  • The need to achieve improved health outcomes across the life course for all.
  • The pressures on health workforce capacity.
