Overview

A request for continuing funding for work aimed at supporting regional drought workers arose out of The Bouverie Centre’s involvement in a number of collaborative initiatives with Rural Outreach Workers (Drought Counsellors), beginning in early 2007. In consultation with The Department of Health (DoH) it was decided that the next phase of the Drought Support Project be built upon the work undertaken with the sector in previous years. A customised training and support package for health and welfare professionals working in counselling roles was developed to deepen capacity in regional and rural workforces to continue to meet the needs of their local communities.

The overall objectives were to:
  • Support existing drought counsellors, as well as rural and regional workers.
  • Consult with drought counsellors to build capacity in rural areas and transfer practice wisdom to the existing workforce.
  • Provide regionally appropriate training and support for the workforce.
  • Adapt workshop materials to include working to assist people coping with natural disasters and particularly bushfires.
