About the Seminar
Older people are frequent users of health services
but are
we meeting their needs? What do our older consumers say about their
experiences whilst receiving care? How do health care specialists
propose to effectively care for the older person in the hospital
setting? How do hospitals meet these new challenges?
This seminar examined ways to improve the older person's journey
through the hospital system. The seminar was for health care service
providers who aimed to meet hospital demands, achieve better outcomes,
create smoother systems, develop innovations across systems and
bring fragmented programs together.
Our new "Core Business"
Victoria's hospitals are experiencing increasing levels of demand.
Existing structures are being severely challenged by the current
profile of patient's needs, especially the increasing use of health
services by those aged 65 years and over. Many older people utilise
hospital services more frequently and for longer periods, than
younger people. Older people with complex and multiple conditions
are increasingly presenting at emergency departments and being
admitted to wards. Presently in Australia, patients over the age
of 65 years account for about half the public hospital bed days
and this figure is increasing as the population ages. This seminar
was a forum to discuss innovative solutions to these and other
issues.
