Victorian Aboriginal people

Major causes of death in Aboriginal people can be attributed to
nutrition related diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.
Disease rates are not only higher than in the non-Aboriginal
population but they occur at a younger age. The reasons for the
physical and emotional ill health in Aboriginal people are very
complex. Strategies to overcome inequalities in health need to be
addressed through collaboration with Aboriginal communities.
The following initiatives work with Aboriginal communities to
promote nutritional health amongst Victorian Aboriginal people.
Development of a Victorian Aboriginal
nutrition needs assessment tool
A Nutrition Needs Assessment Tool specifically targeting
Victorian Aboriginal communities has been developed to enable
consistent collection of information relating to nutritional
health. The tool will be used to assist in developing a Victorian
Aboriginal nutrition strategy.
A draft nutrition needs assessment tool was developed
following:
- a review of needs assessment tools and their use in Indigenous
and non-Indigenous communities,
- mapping of Aboriginal focused nutrition programs and
activities currently conducted in Victoria.
Consultation identified that the tool should focus on
prioritising needs and developing strategies for action rather than
dwelling on the problems in the community. The preferred process to
collect information was by the use of groups or workshops.

Piloting the Victorian Aboriginal
nutrition needs assessment tool
Three Aboriginal communities have been selected to pilot the
Victorian Aboriginal nutrition needs assessment tool. Using the
tool, communities can identify their local nutrition issues, and
gaps in nutrition resources, services and programs that are offered
locally. Local implementation plans can be developed based on the
information collected. Reports will describe how the action areas
identified in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Nutrition Strategy and Action Plan (NATSINSAP) need to be modified
to suit local these communities.

Cooperative, Swan Hill and District Aboriginal Cooperative,

Development of a Victorian Aboriginal
nutrition training program
To develop an Aboriginal Nutrition Workforce in the community, a
review of local and interstate nutrition training programs for
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers will be
undertaken whilst consulting with the Victorian Aboriginal
community. The project will then develop and pilot a Victorian
Aboriginal nutrition training program and resources, plus a model
for delivery of training to the targeted group.
Organisation undertaking the work: Monash
University
Timelines: Project commenced June 2002. Completed.
