Healthy weight

Page content: Interventions targeting families with children | Body image | Be Active, Eat Well

The increasing prevalence of obesity is a major public health problem in Australia. Australia has devised a strategic plan for the prevention of overweight and obesity 'Acting on Australia's Weight', a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) report.

Interventions targeting families with children

Evidence-Based Health Promotion: Resources for Planning. No.5 - Population based nutrition interventions targeting families with children

This is an extensive review of a broad range of best practice models and approaches that aim to improve the nutrition of families with young children (birth to age 15). Advice on both the short and long term evaluation appropriate to each of the best practice models is provided and gaps in information and research in this area highlighted.

This resource is intended for a range of health and community professionals with a current role or future interest in delivering nutrition services to the target group reviewed. It may be used by managers of Community Health Services, DHS regional offices, Primary Care Partnerships, alliance agencies and non-government organisations with a key role in delivering Public Health Nutrition messages to the wider community. Others from Universities and TAFE or other learning institutions delivering nutrition courses, especially those with a public health focus, may use the outcomes of the review to inform students on ways to implement Public Health Nutrition programs.

Evidence-Based Health Promotion: Resources for Planning. No.6 - Body Image

There is growing awareness of the importance of body image as a public health issue with both mental and physiological consequences. Body image has been identified as one of the most common issues in Victorian women's health services.

Three resources have been produced as a result of this project:

  1. Best Bets: Planning Body Image Programs, the shortest publication, is designed to be used as a briefing or general information document. It provides a summary of the information contained in the Research Review, and recommendations for practice.

  2. The basis of the package is the Research Review of Body Image Programs. The Research Review describes the programs that have been implemented and evaluated, and their contribution to knowledge about effective approaches. It is an academic review of evaluated programs which were designed to prevent body image dissatisfaction.

  3. Shapes: Body Image Program Planning Guide provides detail of the better programs and other promising but unevaluated programs. It also introduces strategies and suggestions to assist in planning successful activities around body satisfaction.

Shapes: Body Image Program Planning Guide is for policy and program planners, and service providers throughout the wider community with an interest in programs designed to promote positive body image, including teachers, nurses, youth workers and health promotion workers. It is designed to assist those developing programs for groups or communities rather than for one-to-one therapy.
