About the Fruit + Veg program
The Fruit + Veg Program has been piloted in over 50 Victorian Schools during 2003 and 2004. It has involved over 20,000 Victorian children, their families and school communities in learning about, as well as enjoying the eating and preparing of fruit and vegetables.
This curriculum based program for Prep to Year 6 children uses a range of teaching materials, first produced by the Health Department of Western Australia, which aim to increase the consumption of fruit and vegetables by primary school children. In Victoria, the program has been modified and implemented by the Department of Human Services with the support of the Department of Education & Training and assistance of VHETTA (Victorian Home Economics and Textiles Teachers' Association).
Objectives of the Fruit + Veg Program are:
- To increase the awareness of the need to eat more fruit and vegetables among primary school-aged children.
- To increase positive attitudes towards fruit and vegetables among primary school-aged children.
- To encourage opportunities for primary school-aged children to plan prepare, taste and be creative with vegetables and fruit.
- To encourage school canteens to provide, healthy fruit and vegetable products to students.
See Teaching resources for the materials that were provided to schools in 2004 as part of the Fruit + Veg kit.
