In February 2004, the DHS Nurse Policy Branch established the Nurse Education and Workforce Advisory Council (NEWAC). The aims of the Council are to contribute to planning and development of the nursing workforce and education strategies that will position nursing in Victoria to provide relevant, appropriate services for the future. It will facilitate and strengthen collaboration and communication between stakeholders to address local and regional nursing education and workforce issues. In addition the Council will inform the Department's nursing workforce and education strategies. NEWAC will be part of a framework for communication, consultation and action to assist the Department to respond to matters arising from the National Nursing and Nursing Education Taskforce, as well contributing to development of a strategic response to the findings of the Nursing Supply and Demand Study. Where identified as necessary, NEWAC will establish sub-committees and / or working groups to facilitate its functions and involve individuals with specific expertise. Other issues will be address as identified.
NEWAC membership is made up of nurses from a variety of sectors including: academia, health services, community, aged, rural and mental health arenas. Meetings are scheduled bi-monthly with additional workshops, sub-committees and meetings held when required.
