NP Implementation Guide

Initial development of the Nurse Practitioner (NP) role in Victoria was based on DHS pilot or demonstration projects. More recently NP collaboratives have been encouraged in targeted service areas to enable sharing of resources and ideas about effective approaches to implementation.

The guides, templates and tools developed to date by Victorian health services and DHSwill be collected together into a NP implementation guide that will assist in the establishment of NP services in a range of settings/context.

The guide will be completed in 2009 and will include information on strategic approaches to NP services, corporate and clinical governance, selection and development of candidates, business case development, evaluation of the impact on services and examples of current NP models in varying settings.

Retaining the mature nursing workforce in Victoria

A current initiative of Nurse Policy Branch ¿Retaining the mature nursing workforce¿ aims to explore the needs of older nurses and midwives including physical needs, professional satisfaction and transitional requirements.

The first stage of the work plan includes an exploration of what other jurisdictions are implementing to assist older nurses as well as challenging some of the myths about older nurses and their capacity and capabilities.

A key activity will be seek input and feedback from mature nurses about how their employers can support older workers with the view to formulating a policy response to the challenges arising from the ageing demographic of nurses and midwives.

The resulting paper will profile the current nursing and midwifery workforce and draw on the published literature about the ageing workforce generally (as well as within health). Importantly, the paper will incorporate the wisdom and experience of those supporting and managing older nurses in the workplace as well as reflecting the views, concerns and aspirations of our older nurses and midwives.

The paper will be completed in 2009-10.
