Nursing In Victoria

Education and Training

The Certificate IV in Nursing (Enrolled/ Division 2 Nursing) is the minimum qualification required for registration as a Division 2 Registered Nurse with the Nurses Board of Victoria.

More information regarding registration can be found at the Nurses Board of Victoria website.

The Certificate IV in Nursing (Enrolled/ Division 2 Nursing) equips new Division 2 Registered Nurses with knowledge, skills and competence to provide nursing care as part of the nursing team. The course links nursing theory with practice.

The Certificate IV in Nursing (Enrolled/ Division 2 Nursing) is provided by registered training organisations (RTOs) and TAFE institutes in the Vocational Educational and Training (VET) sector with clinical practice undertaken in a range of health service settings.

The course may be undertaken either as full-time, part-time studies or as a traineeship. More information about traineeships is available from our FAQ page. Training may be Government subsidised, in which case students pay a small administration fee, or may be full fee-paying. You will need to check these details before applying.

Courses and course providers are accredited by the Nurses Board of Victoria. A list of accredited courses can be found at the Nurses Board of Victoria website.

More information about courses including prerequisites and application process can be found by contacting your local training provider. Alternatively, additional information can be found at the TAFE Courses Directory.

Some courses require the applicant to apply via the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).

Health Training Package (HLT07)

The Health Training Package (HLT07) was developed by the Community Services & Health Industry Skills Council for utilisation by the Vocational Educational and Training (VET) sector in providing health workers with health industry qualifications.

From January 2008 a new qualification available from the Health Training Package (HLT07) will be available for Division 2 (Enrolled) nurses. For the first time the Health Training Package includes national qualifications for Division 2 (Enrolled) nurses.

HLT43407 Certificate IV in Nursing (Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing) is accredited by the Nurses Board of Victoria and will replace the current Victorian based qualification (21358VIC).

The new qualification incorporates units in medicines administration previously covered in the Course in Medication Administration for Division 2 nurses in Victoria (21506VIC).

Those completing the HLT43407 Certificate IV in Nursing (Enrolled/ Division 2 Nursing) will be eligible to apply for medicines endorsement upon initial registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria.

Additional qualifications in the Health Training Package at the Diploma and Advanced Diploma provide opportunities for Division 2 (Enrolled) nurses to develop their skills with either full qualifications or specialist units in many fields including acute care, palliative care and mental health.

Additional information can be found at the TAFE Courses Directory.
