In 2005, Nurse Policy Branch engaged key stakeholders across the nursing profession in a process to explore the concerns expressed by education providers, health services, regulatory and industrial organisations regarding undergraduate preparation of Division 1 and 2 nurses. The result was ‘Prepare Nurses for the Future’ project. A report on this consultation phase, including the issues and proposed directions for the project are documented in the Phase 1 Report.
In Phase Two which commenced in 2005-06, a steering group and four working groups were established to examine the feasibility of the recommendations from Phase 1 and oversee pilot projects to test and evaluate implementation options. Fourteen projects that explored different aspects of the recommendations were commissioned. Collectively, the projects investigated aspects of nurse training and preparation for registration and professional practice including clinical placements. The project teams comprised of representatives of health services and universities were monitored by the working groups, which in turn reported to the PNFF Steering Group.
The projects were not intended as a comprehensive review of nursing education but instead focused on strengthening elements so that new nurses are better prepared to meet the challenges of commencing work in a complex and dynamic health and educational context. The Phase 2 Report outlines the projects and provides comment on future directions.
