From July 1 2010, the regulating authority for nursing in Victoria is the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and all applications for registration must be made to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Austraila, telephone 1300 419 495.
Only nurses or midwives currently registered by the Board are able to call themselves a "registered nurse, registered midwife or Enrolled nurse (Division 2)" in Victoria and be employed as a nurse or midwife.
The initial education and ongoing registration of nurses and midwives is based on national competencies for registered nurses, enrolled nurses, midwives and nurse practitioners. To find a copy of these standards go to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Austraila website.
Support is available if you were previously registered as a nurse and wish to regain your nursing registration. Further details may be found at Returning to nursing.
To find out about living and working as a registered nurse or midwife in Victoria, read our Fact sheet: International nursing and midwifery graduates and information on International Nurse Graduates (Overseas Trained Nurses).
For more information relating to the recognition of overseas qualifications visit the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council and the General skilled migration to Australia websites.
