National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition Strategy and Action Plan – 2000–2010

Overview

On behalf of the Working Party I have pleasure in presenting to you the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition Strategy and Action Plan.

Many individuals and organisations including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nutrition workforce, NACCHO and ATSIC have made valuable contributions to the development of the Strategy and Action Plan.

The Strategy and Action Plan provides a framework for national action to bring about an improvement in the nutritional status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. It is the wish of the Working Party that the strategy is read and implemented in the spirit of collaboration in which it was developed.

A lot of illness in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is diet related and preventable within the existing knowledge base and with additional resources.

The big challenge is for all partners including industry, health, non-government and government organisations to respond to each of the key areas and take action in implementing the Strategy and Action Plan.
