Nasal CPAPNasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) is an effective treatment for respiratory distress syndrome. Whilst there is extensive experience in the use of NCPAP in tertiary units, the use of NCPAP in Level 2 Victorian nurseries as a definitive treatment to reduce the need for transfer to a tertiary centre is uncommon and heterogeneous.In recognition that there is considerable variation in practice in the use of NCPAP in Level 2 hospitals with special care nurseries, a multidisciplinary group of the Neonatal Services Advisory Committee developed guidelines on Administration of nasal CPAP in non-tertiary Level 2 nurseries. The guidelines were developed to assist Level 2 units wishing to utilise this therapy to do so in a safe, effective and efficient manner. Their purpose is to provide best practice guidelines to optimise the care provided by those Level 2 nurseries that do wish to deliver this procedure. The guidelines cover four main areas:
