Neonatal Services Review Report 1998

A review of Victorian neonatal services was conducted in 1998. The resulting Neonatal Services Review Report 1998 proposed measures to optimise and improve neonatal services.

In summary, the Review found that in spite of a static birthrate overall, the demand for neonatal services had increased, mainly due to:

  • advances in neonatology leading to the survival of smaller babies;
  • lifestyle factors amongst pregnant women such as drug dependency and smoking;
  • assisted conceptions.

The key elements for improving neonatal services were identified by the Review as being:

  • capital and operating resources;
  • collaboration between neonatal services;
  • focus on babies at risk and community linkages;
  • the medical and nursing workforces; and
  • prevention of prematurity.
