An approved mental health service is a premises or service where a person may be involuntarily treated as an inpatient for their mental illness.

Victoria’s approved mental health services are proclaimed by the Governor in Council under section 94 of the Mental Health Act 1986. Section 94(1) provides that the Governor in Council may, by a proclamation published in the Government Gazette, proclaim any premises (including part of any building or place) at which treatment is to be provided to patients or any service through which treatment is to be provided to patients, to be an approved mental health service.
