This protocol is a result of collaboration between Mental Health, Drugs & Regions Division (MHDR), with Ambulance Victoria, mental health service providers, and consumer& carer representatives. It replaces the 2002 protocol for the Ambulance Transport of People with Mental Illness (the Protocol). It is a resource for interactions between ambulance services and clinicians working in public mental health services, and also provides useful information for other health and mental health professionals, who may need to organise the transport of a person with a mental illness.

The Integrated Rehabilitation and Recovery Care Program (IRRCP) was a transition program for consumers from Secure Extended Care Units (SECU) and Community Care Units (CCU), who need a higher level of combined clinical and community treatment and support than is usually available to become reintegrated into the community. IRRCP was piloted in three metropolitan consortia in Melbourne from 2007 and evaluated by the Social Policy Research Centre, University of New South Wales (July 2009).
