Partnerships to Better Outcomes Archived May 2006

On Wednesday 14 September 2005 over 200 people representing more than 70 organisations, carers and consumers attended the Mental Health Branch Forum, "Partnerships to Better Outcomes, Supporting the mental health of children and young people" held at Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre. Representatives from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), their invited service partners and other stakeholders including consumer and carer participants were present.

The program reflected the Forum's focus; a range of opportunities for those present to explore and progress how a system of mental health care can improve mental health outcomes for children, adolescents and young people. School children involved with the Festival for Healthy Living welcomed participants in song and reminded us about the importance of mental health and well-being followed by opening addresses from Ruth Vine, Director of the Mental Health Branch and Michael White, Director, Statewide Outcomes for Children, Office for Children which overviewed the government's policy and service development context.

Professor Graham Martin, Director Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, University of Queensland, delivered the Keynote Address focusing on the importance of knowledgeable and skilled staff to the provision of high quality and effective service delivery. Energetic and robust group discussions in both morning and afternoon sessions allowed participants to share ideas and views across a range of issues supported by examples of innovative practice illustrating key aspects of a system of care by a number of CAMHS and their partners. A panel of representatives representing various views about the key aspects of a system of care and future directions provided a fitting end to a very worthwhile day.
