Maternity Workforce Grant Funding 2008-2009

The maternity workforce strategy was an integral part of an action plan to progress the Future Directions for Victoria’s Maternity Services (Future Directions) policy. Several non-recurrent funding grants were made available for innovative projects that supported recruitment and retention and the optimal use of workforce skill mix.

The objectives of this funding were to:

  • Contribute to the capacity of health services to implement new models of maternity care by addressing related workforce models
  • Provide health services with support to integrate sustainable, positive changes into mainstream maternity practice to improve maternity options, choice and control for women
  • Increase the capacity of the maternity workforce through workforce redesign and build a more capable multidisciplinary workforce
  • Foster the sharing of information and experiences amongst health services e.g. through publishing on website, profiling at maternity managers meetings

Details of the funded projects, outcomes and contact details of project leads are now made available to assist other maternity services in developing their maternity workforce, implementing new models of maternity care by addressing related workforce issues and influencing workforce practice change within their health service.

Sustainable Maternity Services Workforce Options

The Sustainable Maternity Services Workforce Options Forum was held in May 2008.  The purpose of making the Report on Sustainable Maternity Services Workforce Options Workshop available electronically is to assist maternity services to

  • Consider the issues inherent in planning, developing and implementing innovative solutions to local service and workforce challenges
  • Explore sustainable maternity workforce options using the report as a resource

Since that time and to continue this work, the Maternity Services Program has

  • Worked collaboratively with relevant sections of the Department to
    • Continue to support the Nursing and Midwifery Scholarships
    • Provide $153K for 9 rural and regional and 2 metropolitan maternity workforce projects
  • Through the workforce initiative, funded a joint project between Midwifery Academics Victoria (MIDAC) and Eastern Health to develop a common midwifery clinical assessment tool
  • In addition, the Maternity and Newborn Clinical Network recently completed the Special Care Nursery project and is now exploring workforce models to maximise midwifery and newborn care

A summary of the project outcomes will be posted on this site once the project reports are complete.
