Maternity Care Education

For some time now health services providing maternity care have requested:

  • Greater access to a range of learning packages and educational resources delivered in a variety of flexible learning modes and
  • Improved awareness of available maternity education programs

The Maternity and Newborn Program have developed a maternity education resource guide which has two components.

  • Component one lists both statewide and national maternity education programs and
  • Component two lists health services’ individual maternity education programs which are accessible to all health services.

Whilst these guides are best used electronically (simply click on the links within the document) they can also be printed.  They are currently in A3 format, but can be printed to A4 size.

Victorian Maternity Education Survey Report 2009

In   May 2009 health services were asked to provide information to the Department relating to maternity education.  The Victorian Maternity Education Survey Report 2009 will provide feedback and information to the sector on this work.

The survey indicated that individual health service maternity education priorities are based on

  • Individual and health service educational needs
  • Quality and safety

Health services identified the need for

  • Greater access to a range of resources that support primary maternity care
  • Regular, onsite or locally delivered maternity education programs
  • Increased maternity education support in regional and rural areas

The information contained in this report has been used by the Department in developing priorities for current and future maternity education programs.
