Municipal Public Health Planning
Good practice program state forum

Monday 23 April 2007

Coordinated by the Public Health Branch of the Department of Human Services, with partners: Municipal Association of Victoria; Planning Institute of Australia; and VicHealth.

Forum information

The one-day forum highlighted leading-edge work undertaken by local governments as part of the Municipal Public Health Planning Good Practice Program.

Environments for Health was released in 2001 to provide a framework to guide local government municipal public health planning.  The framework recognises the key role of local government in creating healthy social, built, economic and natural environments for their communities.

The Good Practice Program was established in 2002 to support local government to develop creative approaches to municipal public health planning using Environments for Health.

The 2007 statewide forum provided an opportunity to showcase projects funded from 2004-2006, highlighting creative approaches to improving public health across the state. The forum featured Professor Evelyne De Leeuw (Deakin University), who presented findings from the statewide evaluation of Environments for Health and discussed how the Victorian experience compares nationally and internationally, and future directions for Environments for Health.

Case studies from the Municipal Public Health Planning Good Practice Program

This publication presents case studies drawing on the experiences of Round 3, Round 4 and Round 5 of the Good Practice Program. The case studies are intended to:

  • showcase the breadth and depth of the work of local government
  • provide practical examples of how local government contributes to health promotion
  • stimulate the development of a broader health promotion framework and ways of working.

The case studies include a cross section of projects from across the three years and across Victoria.
