Local Government Planning for Health Workshop held at Ministerial Rural & Regional Health Forum

As part of the 10th Ministerial Rural and Regional Health Forum held in Traralgon on September 8th 2006, the Local Government Partnership team facilitated the delivery of the Local Government Planning for Health workshop. Only the second time in the history of the Ministerial Rural Health Forums that local government has been a specific focus, the workshop was an important opportunity for information sharing, discussion and debate around the health promotion role of this important sector.

Program
The workshop was attended by over 30 forum participants focused on the key role of local government in building healthy communities. Jeanette Draper from Bass Coast Shire Council chaired the session and the program included presentations by:

• Dr Rob Moodie, CEO of VicHealth
• Dr Iain Butterworth, Senior Lecturer, Deakin University
• Chantelle Miller, SunSmart Program Coordinator, Cancer Council Victoria

In the final session of the program, Mick Gordon (PDF Management) acted as game show host, getting workshop participants to roll the dice and navigate the challenges of creating a healthier community on a life size game board created for the workshop.

The game was initially developed for the Winter 2006 issue of the VicHealth Letter and proved to be a great resource for stimulating creative thinking and discussion around the many ways local government can contribute to creating a healthier community.
