Introduction

Poisoning is the second highest cause of zero to four-year-old child hospitalisations in Victoria, according to the latest trend data from the Accident Research Centre at Monash University.

Most young children who are unintentionally poisoned at home come from loving families with attentive, caring parents or guardians. However, it’s simply not possible to watch your children every minute of every day.

That’s why it’s so important to:

  • Lock poisons away or putting them out of reach and out of sight
  • Don’t underestimate your child’s abilities or interests
  • Never refer to medicines as lollies
  • Keep visitor’s handbags out of your child’s reach.

The brochure "Is your home poison proof?" provides information to help parents poison-proof their homes.
