Infection associated with health care is one of the most common adverse outcomes in health care systems in the developed world. The patients most at risk are the very sick, the very old and very young?those patients who have benefited substantially from advances in medicine, surgery and health technologies. While not all hospital-acquired infections (HAI?s) can be prevented, we can ensure that systems are in place to minimise their occurrence.
The reduction of hospital acquired infections is an important key issue for the health sector, the Department of Human Services and the Government.

Victorian Cleaning Standards Program - Newsletter, June 2009 (39kb, pdf)
This document comprises a set of standards and tools which should be used by health services to monitor and further improve their cleaning services. Cleaning standards were first published in 2000 and were reviewed and updated in 2004/2005 and again in 2007/2008.
The cleaning standards are a performance requirement of the Department of Human Services and can be applied to all health facilities regardless of whether cleaning services are contracted out or performed in-house.
A course in cleaning standards auditing has been developed and further information about the course and about DHS approved cleaning standards auditors will be posted once arrangements for course delivery have been finalised.
