HOSPITAL SERVICES REPORT : PRIVATE SECTOR ACTIVITY- JUN97

Private Sector Activity

Currently, private health service establishments are able to register services under any of the 12 categories in Schedules 8 and 9 of the Health Services (Private Hospitals and Day Procedure Centres) Regulations 1991, featuring in Figure 1.1.

The most common service for which both metropolitan and rural hospitals are regis tered are medical and surgical services. A high proportion of rural hospitals provide obstetric, emergency medicine and In-Vitro-Fertilisation services, while a higher proportion of metropolitan hospitals provide coronary care, intensive care, psychiatric and specialist rehabilitation services. Radiation oncology services are currently only offered by a small proportion of metropolitan private hospitals. Over 80% of DPCs specialise in endoscopy services.
