Inquiry into the practice of recovered memory therapyThe Commissioner was requested to investigate and report to Victoria's Minister for Health, The Hon Bronwyn Pike, by July 2005 about the practice of 'recovered memory therapy' (RMT). RMT, as defined in the Terms of Reference, "is any … form of therapy, or other clinical or therapeutic strategies that have a component based on or incorporating a belief that memories can be repressed and focusing on or adopting methods designed to assist the patient/client to elucidate those memories." This type of therapy has been primarily associated with the recovery of memories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). The aim of the Inquiry was to identify opportunities for improving practice and protecting the public. This Report presents the findings and recommendations. Download document
