Hospital Circular 25/2008
Date Issued: 18 September 2008
Distribution: Public Health Services, Public Hospitals, Denominational Hospitals and Multi-purpose Services
Subject: Changes to billing requirements for surgical procedures in public hospitals for Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and WorkSafe patients
On 1 September the TAC wrote to all surgeons advising them of a new requirement for invoices rendered to the TAC and WorkSafe Victoria for surgical services provided in public hospitals. It is now required that these invoices include a copy of the hospital operation report generated at the time of the surgical procedure.
To ensure consistency across the health system this policy will be applicable to surgery performed in both public and private hospitals.
The TAC/Worksafe accounts should clearly identify the patient’s name, claim number (if known), date of birth and date of procedure.
The hospital operation report should be contemporaneous and include the following:
- Name of principal surgeon
- Name of assistants
- Description of all services, and
- Appropriate MBS item numbers
Please note invoices to the TAC and WorkSafe will not be processed without these details. If accounts are submitted electronically, a copy of the hospital operation report is required to be forwarded by post to the relevant agency.
Hospitals are required to implement this process from 1 October 2008.
This initiative complies with privacy and confidentiality requirements and has been endorsed by the department. If a hospital wishes to implement alternative arrangements, these should be discussed with the department. Any enquiries should be raised with Peter Lewis on 90969050 or by email at peter.lewis@dhs.vic.gov.au
