Date Issued: 7 March 2001

Publication: 3/2001

Distribution: Public Hospitals

Subject: Management of Long Service Leave

Purpose: To provide hospitals with updated practices for management of Long Services Leave

The Department of Human Services, Trades Hall Council and the Victorian Hospital Industry Association have had several meetings to discuss the management of long service leave within the public health sector.

The Minster for Health has recently endorsed the Department entering into a two-phase approach to further review and pursue improvement in the funding and management of long service leave entitlements. In the short term, the Department will provide additional funding to meet the cash requirements for long service leave where the cost is in excess of budget funding. A review assessing the feasibility of establishing a long service leave fund will commence shortly and you will be kept informed about the review. Separate work is also progressing to address the funding of increases to the balance sheet when new wages settlements are made.

Attachment 1 below is a Bulletin on the management of long service leave for your information. If you require further information on the process of funding cash long service leave costs please contact Richard Bolitho, Financial Services on 9616 8198.
