Volunteers the lifeblood for Peter Mac patients

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre’s perioperative department has received a new rapid infuser thanks to generous support from volunteers.

The rapid infuser is used for complex surgical cases for patients who require rapid fluids and/or blood transfusions.

With an increase in complexity in surgical cases, demand for this device has significantly increased at Peter Mac.

‘In situations where this device is used, it is life-changing for patients,’ said perioperative nurse unit manager Dave Curtin.

This is the second rapid infuser at Peter Mac – the centre also has an earlier model of this machine.

A $25,000 contribution from the centre’s volunteers – money raised via initiatives like a convenience trolley selling confectionary and magazines – made it possible to buy the latest version of this life-saving machine.
