Sustainability award for Melbourne Health

Melbourne Health has topped the health category in this year’s Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards for its reducing hunger and food waste in our community program.

Acknowledging the impacts of food waste, Melbourne Health’s surplus patient meals are collected daily by OzHarvest, which delivers them to community food hub Northpoint Centre for processing and distribution, helping community members in need.

Since February 2018, more than 4,000 meals per month have been redistributed, removing nine tonnes of food from landfill per year and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 17 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent – embracing the principles of environmental, economic and social sustainability.

Sustainability Victoria’s interim Chief Executive Officer Carl Muller said the awards showed how management of environmental issues was of growing importance for all Victorians – no matter their age, where they live or what they do.

‘Each year, the Premier’s Sustainability Awards continue to discover Victoria’s best and most inspiring individuals, organisations and businesses that are developing and implementing new sustainable practices.

‘Congratulations to all of this year’s winners.

‘Your contributions will have positive long-term benefits for us all,’ Mr Muller said.
