Gippsland residents showed their support for those affected by breast cancer by attending the mini field of women demonstration.

Pink ladies salute breast cancer families

One hundred silhouettes formed a mini field of women on Pink Ribbon Day at Latrobe Regional Hospital—saluting those affected by breast cancer and their families.

‘This is an opportunity to show support for women from right across Gippsland who have been affected by breast cancer,’ Cancer Care Nurse Erme Maxwell said.

‘The 100 pink ladies will represent the women who have been affected.

The mini field of women was originally set up in the foyer of the Monash School of Rural Health then on to the front lawn of the hospital in Traralgon West.

The first field of women appeared in Australia in 1998, when 12,500 silhouettes were planted at Parliament House in Canberra.

Since then, mini fields of women have sprung up all around Australia, including one of the most memorable at the MCG.

‘These fields of women have had such a moving and lasting impact they have become a regular event,’ Ms Maxwell said.

‘The event encourages the coming together of local communities to pay tribute to women that have been impacted by breast cancer.’

Latrobe Regional Hospital, Gippsland Breast Screen, Latrobe Breast Cancer Support Group and Breast Cancer Network Australia supported the Pink Ribbon Day event.
