Looking good, feeling better
The program, established in
1990, helps women manage the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.
Trained volunteers run the
two-hour workshops, which include a makeover, tips and a pack of beauty
products for patients to take home.
While many cancer patients would
agree appearance is usually the least of their worries, one participant said
the program reminded her of the impact a ‘bit of lippy’ could have on one’s
self-esteem.
‘If you have visitors and you’re
not feeling too good, it can really give you a lot of confidence,’ said Rhonda
Sanderson, who took part in the program at Box Hill Hospital last year.
Her friend, Lesley Emmerson, who
she met at the workshop, said the best part of the program was the interaction
with other cancer patients.
’I think we all get a real boost
from the people who are doing well and staying positive.’
Two more workshops will be
held—on July 28 and October 27.
