Suicide prevention trial for Macedon Ranges Health

Macedon Ranges Health has been selected as one of 12 trial sites across the state, as part of the Government’s Victorian Suicide Prevention Framework.

The framework provides a ‘whole-of-government’ commitment and strategy to reduce the suicide toll.

This is part of Victoria’s 10-year mental health plan, which began in 2016 and aims to halve Victoria’s suicide rates by 2025.

A suicide prevention project officer will lead the project and engage relevant stakeholders including community groups, service providers, policy makers and those who have lived experiences of suicide.

Benetas Chief Executive Officer Sandra Hills said funding supported the ongoing commitment to address the growing demands of mental health support in the Macedon Ranges region.

‘We are extremely grateful to be a part of this program,’ said Ms Hills.

‘This trial provides a unique opportunity to create change and improve outcomes for local people who are at risk of suicide.’

MRH is involved in the Macedon Ranges suicide prevention action group (MRSPAG) which conducted SafeTALK workshops throughout May to prepare members of the local community, regardless of prior experience, to become a suicide-alert helper.

General manager of strategy and primary care at Benetas Chris Karagiannis is in strong support of the work being done by the action group.

‘The suicide prevention action group is undertaking some immensely important work for the region.’
