Hospital staff celebrate diversity

Public healthcare services – including Northern and Eastern Health – have celebrated the international day against homophobia, biphobia, interphobia and transphobia (IDAHOBIT) day.

Northern Health hosted the inaugural ‘genderbread bake-off’.

Joint winners of the bake-off, primary care liaison officer Karen Overall and patient experience and consumer participation manager Sophie Rodier explained why they participated.

‘It is important to support our diverse community to ensure equality for all regardless of gender, religious and cultural differences,’ Ms Overall said.

‘I was keen to highlight the work Northern Health is doing through our diversity and inclusion group to improve the experience of our patients,’ Ms Rodier said.

General practitioner and LGBTI health expert Ruth McNair hosted information sessions.

Dr McNair specialises in lesbian and bisexual women’s health, transgender health, mental health and wellbeing and is an honorary Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne, teaching LGBTI community research.

Chair of Northern Health’s LGBTIQ+ working group Anne Hastie encouraged staff to ask patients how best to engage with them around issues of gender, identity and sexuality.

Eastern Health staff showed their support by showing their colours.
