It’s fun to go to the YMCA

As part of Heart Week, Wimmera Health’s Healthy Hearts Cardiac Rehabilitation Group visited Horsham YMCA to take part in a low-impact exercise class.

The Heart Foundation’s goal for the awareness week was to improve the heart health of all Australians and educate people on the symptoms of heart attack.

Wimmera Health Care Group cardiac nurse Susie Ellis said the trip to the gym aimed to show people in the class that they could still exercise with heart problems.

‘Kim Fulcher from Horsham YMCA took the class and led a range of exercises,’ Ms Ellis said.

‘I think Kim’s presentation really helped take some of the stigma out of going to the gym and showed the participants there are a range of machines and activities available for all levels of ability.’

Ms Ellis was very happy with the turn-out to the class with about 20 people taking part.

‘It was a great way to show that even if you have a heart condition, you can still exercise.

‘Not only is it possible to exercise but it is also good for you.’

Ms Ellis said the Heart Foundation had launched a range of resources on its website – http://www.heartattackfacts.org.au/ – during Heart Week, including fact sheets on how to recognise the symptoms of a heart attack.
