Oral health care ambassador in a league of her own

Dental Health Services Victoria has announced one of the AFL Women’s League’s brightest players as its 2019 Smile of the Year ambassador.

Each year DHSV confers the Smile of the Year title to an influential member of the community as a partner in combatting poor oral health – Australia’s most prevalent condition.

This year, Collingwood midfielder Brittany Bonnici will help DHSV connect with youth to help improve their access to oral health services and information.

‘Brittany is a fantastic role model, especially for young people,’ said DHSV Chief Executive Officer Deborah Cole.

‘Not only is she a great example of health and fitness, she also genuinely cares about helping others and making a difference,’ Dr Cole said.

In addition to her role in the AFLW, Ms Bonnici is studying social work, volunteers to tackle youth homelessness and works in disability support.

Ms Bonnici said being chosen as DHSV’s Smile of the Year ambassador gave her a chance to highlight the importance of good oral health among young people and spread the message that mental and physical wellbeing plays an important role in oral health.

‘This award will allow me to join DHSV to promote oral health with other young people,’ Ms Bonnici said.

‘It’s great to be able to share the message that staying active, eating a healthy and balanced diet and taking care of your oral health can have such a positive impact on your life.

‘Better oral health starts with three easy steps – eat well, drink well and clean well.’
