Aboriginal artwork depicts patient journey

Northern Health has unveiled an artwork by Kahli Luttrell – a Yorta Yorta woman from Epping – in the day oncology unit at Northern Hospital Epping.

Funded by an Aboriginal cultural safety program grant, it is part of a larger project that aims to improve cultural safety at Northern Health.

Besides the commissioning of the artwork from a local Aboriginal artist, the project includes consultation with local elders to identify priorities for inclusion and displaying of plaques acknowledging the traditional owners of the land.

The Koorie Contemporary artwork by Ms Luttrell depicts the patient journey with its seasons and struggles.

‘It doesn’t matter if the road is long,’ said Ms Luttrell.

‘A caring and supportive community is always at hand, represented by the dots and circles – a recurring motif throughout the painting.

‘Along with the soothing colours I have chosen, overall, the painting is intended to bring a sense of peace.’
