Victorian Minister for Health David Davis and Commonwealth Minister for Health Tanya Plibersek have formally appointed Plenary Health to build the $1 billion new Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) facilities in Parkville.

The VCCC project is jointly funded by the Victorian and Commonwealth governments with contributions from member organisations, the sale of surplus land and philanthropic donations.

‘The new facilities to be constructed in Parkville will be the new home for a relocated Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, provide space for the University of Melbourne cancer research laboratories and provide new accommodation for Royal Melbourne Hospital cancer patients and cancer researchers,’ Mr Davis said.

The lead parties within the Plenary Health consortium are the Plenary Group as sponsor and investor, Grocon and PCL as the builder in a joint venture and Honeywell as the facilities/maintenance manager.

The VCCC is a powerful alliance of eight successful Victorian organisations committed to cancer control – Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne Health (including the Royal Melbourne Hospital), the University of Melbourne, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, the Royal Women’s and Royal Children’s and St Vincent’s Hospitals and Western Health.

This collaboration will position the VCCC in the top 10 of cancer centres worldwide bringing together the best minds in cancer research, education and training, treatment and care.

The VCCC will build on existing linkages and networks within the local, national and international cancer system, including across academic programs, research and education collaborations, clinical programs and with the Victorian and Commonwealth governments.

Member organisations will continue to work closely with people impacted by cancer to improve the patient experience and better meet the needs of the Victorian community.

Together, the member organisations provide comprehensive services in cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, care and follow-up while promoting and integrating internationally-relevant research and education.

The VCCC collaborative approach encourages rapid translation of evidence-based research discoveries into the best clinical practice, to achieve better outcomes for all cancer patients.

The VCCC integrates and builds on cancer education and training programs for cancer health professionals, researchers and students.
