Gold for Guillaume after health battles

After battling two types of cancer and undergoing major heart surgery, Austin Health patient Guillaume Zigan is finally catching up on life.

‘I’m very lucky,’ Mr Zigan said.

‘I’ve got great support around me… my family and friends.’

In 2015, Mr Zigan was diagnosed with leukaemia and started treatment at Austin Health’s Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre.

After a bone marrow transplant in 2016, he relapsed within three months.

He received stem-cell treatment and took part in a clinical drug trial that cleared his diagnosis.

Then, in 2017, Mr Zigan suffered an aortic aneurysm that required urgent open-heart surgery.

‘It was a very tough time.’

Director of clinical haematology Andrew Grigg said Mr Zigan’s recovery was remarkable.

‘He had three life-threatening problems and he found the strength to overcome all of those…it’s a fantastic, inspirational story,’ Professor Grigg said.

After his recovery, Mr Zigan participated in the Australian Transplant Games in October where he won gold.

His goal was to get back to his normal life and make up for lost time.

‘If you fight and you are one of the lucky ones, you can get there,’ Mr Zigan said.
