Help for vulnerable seniors

A new state-wide initiative is helping vulnerable older people towards long-term affordable and appropriate housing.

Home at Last is provided by Housing for the Aged Action Group and is one of 11 homelessness innovation action projects funded by the Victorian Government as part of its Homelessness Action Plan.

The Home at Last service is assisting two main groups:

•             Those who have uncertain housing futures are helped to plan ahead towards finding affordable housing that suits their needs;

•             Those who are threatened with eviction due to legal action or prohibitive costs or who may no longer be able to live in their housing because of the need for modifications or more disability-friendly housing.

Private rental housing is a problem for older people as it is often insecure, unaffordable on an aged pension and difficult to adapt as people age.

Home at Last is a one-stop-shop of housing information, advice and support for older people.

It responds to the individual needs by providing a caring, personalised service.

Home at Last staff develop individual housing and support plans and either provide direct assistance or, where more convenient, refer a client to a local service.

Referrals to services are created by Home at Last to ensure a person does not lose contact or fall through the safety net.

•             Government departments and agencies who identify an older person in housing need are encouraged to contact Home at Last on 1300 765 178.
