Women-only area opens at Box Hill Hospital

Women accessing services at Upton House Adult Inpatient Unit at Eastern Health’s Box Hill campus will feel safer and better supported in a new area catering exclusively to the needs of women.

Mental Health Minister Mary Wooldridge said it would provide women with a safe, private and secure area for treatment.

Ms Wooldridge said the new area comprised four single and three shared bedrooms complete with en-suite facilities, in addition to a massage chair, a separate comfortable living room and adjoining outdoor area.

‘Access to the women-only area is by electronic swipe access and each bedroom can be locked from the inside of the room providing further security.’

Ms Wooldridge said research found more than 60 per cent of women in inpatient units experienced harassment or abuse.

‘We know women can have very different experiences and issues from men in relation to their mental health.

‘This is why the Government has provided $4 million to establish women-only spaces in existing mental health services across Victoria, including the refurbished Upton House in Box Hill.’
