Award honours Kelly Weire

Bendigo Health’s Sarah Gallagher is this year’s recipient of the Kelly Weire Memorial Award.

Sponsored by the Weire family, the award commemorates the achievements of their daughter, who died in a plane crash in Papua New Guinea in August 2009.

Ms Weire was an occupational therapist who embraced every opportunity with passion and determination and was committed to learning and improving her skills, continually challenging herself.

The award is presented to a Bendigo Health occupational therapist who demonstrates the qualities Ms Weir epitomised – passion, commitment and determination.

Her parents Deborah and Keith Weire have sponsored the award for five years.

They said they hoped it inspired the recipient to ‘be the best they could be.’

‘Kelly was very focused on learning,’ Mrs Weire said.

‘She worked at Bendigo Health for almost two years.

‘She studied in Melbourne and moved to Bendigo and it was the love of her life.

‘She loved the community and all the people she worked with and was passionate about the job.’

Bendigo Health allied health director Sally Harris said Ms Gallagher, who has worked with Bendigo Health since 2013, was nominated for the award not just because of her fine clinical skills but because of her enthusiasm, leadership and commitment to continuous improvement of services.

‘Sarah is passionate about occupational therapy and the delivery of services in the community setting.

‘She works closely with other services and provides support to junior staff and students.

‘Sarah is someone who assists clients to identify their goals and works collaboratively with them to achieve the outcomes they plan for,’ Ms Harris said.
