Victorian Environmental Health Indicator Project (VEHIP)

Page content: Introduction | Contents | Download document

Introduction

The Victorian Environmental Health Indicator Project (VEHIP) is an initial attempt at a state level to establish an improved basis for understanding the relationship between environmental factors and health and trends in these factors over time.
The project aims to facilitate:

  • monitoring trends in the state of environmental factors known to impact upon health
  • monitoring trends in health effects related to environmental hazards
  • assisting relevant decision-makers to understand environmental health issues
  • contributing environmental health indicators for Your Health: a report on the health of Victorians.

This discussion paper presents a brief background to environmental health indicators and describes the aims and structure of a potential environmental health surveillance system for Victoria. We hope the discussion paper will stimulate dialogue and additional ideas on the subject. We invite you to submit feedback and comments on the VEHIP to robert.mckenzie@dhs.vic.gov.au.
