Administrative data & reports
Administrative data refers to information primarily collected for administrative (not research) purposes, which are subsequently used to produce statistics. This type of data is collected by government departments and other organisations for the purposes of registration, transaction and record keeping, usually during the delivery of a service.
In Australia, government departments are the main (although not exclusive) purveyors of large health administrative databases, including tax, health and educational record systems. These datasets have for many years been used to produce official statistics to inform policy-making. In Victoria some major health administrative databases are the Victorian Admitted Episode Dataset (VAED), the Victorian Emergency Minimum Dataset (VEMD) and the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Health Intelligence Unit has developed various reports based on administrative datasets.
