Statewide health promotion organisations - a partnerships resource for local agencies

Introduction

Victoria has a well-established group of statewide non-government (charitable or not-for-profit) organisations with a strong health promotion focus. A number of these organisations are state based affiliates of national organisations. These Statewide Health Promotion Organisations (SHPO’s) define their business in terms of specific health conditions, risk factors or population groups often resulting in an overlap in services between organisations. Collaboration between SHPO’s and leadership coalitions around particular issues is becoming increasingly common and is encouraged and supported by the Department of Human Services (DHS).

The SHPO’s provide significant skills and capacities in relation to health promotion research, program development and service delivery. Most have an existing record of working alongside sections of the primary health and community support service sector and many have developed innovative models for implementing programs in conjunction with local service delivery agencies.

This is the third edition of the Statewide Health Promotion Organisations: A Partnerships Resource For Local Agencies (the Resource), which is produced to assist statewide and local agencies. The Resource provides a list of statewide health promotion agencies and defines the activities of each agency, detailing current examples of project work and partnerships. The Resource will be useful for those working in the primary health and community services sector, particularly where health promotion networks may be poorly developed. The Resource has the potential to enhance health promotion practice in these areas by fostering new partnerships between the SHPO’s and encouraging them to better meet local needs.

The DHS developed the Resource as part of its efforts to ensure that health promotion is an integral part of the primary care sector. This Resource is specifically designed to assist service agencies and does not replace the list of health promotion services for clients provided in the Service Directory link of the Government’s Better Health Channel, or the Human Services Directory.

This third edition of the Resource is reflective of recent changes within the sector, and includes up-to-date information from all agencies listed.
