Awards judging
The Awards provide a unique opportunity for healthcare professionals to be recognised by their peers for their commitment to innovative, visionary healthcare.
The independence of the Awards is maintained through the dedication and integrity of the Healthcare Award judges, who generously volunteer their time and expertise to appraise the entries. Their passion and ongoing commitment is vital to the Award’s success.
Selection to the judging panels
The 2011 Awards judging college comprises experienced judges, those recruited specifically for their expertise or who represent particular aspects (such as a rural focus, consumers, Aboriginal health) of the healthcare sector.
Each year the Secretariat invites previous Award winners to join the judging college and also asks chief executive from a cross section of Victorian health services, non government organisations and peak bodies to nominate their key staff members to be judges. In addition, the Secretariat invites consumers to participate as judges and in 2011 will do this in association with the Health Issues Centre’s Consumer Nominee Program.
Members of the Ministerial Advisory Council (MAC) will be invited to join the 2011 judging college. The MAC was appointed by the Minister for Heath to provide advice and information on the best possible approach to planning for improved health services in Victoria.
This year’s judging college comprise volunteers from a range of positions including board members, chief executives, general managers and directors, health researchers, quality managers, patient advocates, consumers and policy advisors. A judging panel of up to eight judges is assigned to each Award, individual panel members are selected on their expertise and experience and to ensure the panel represents the full spectrum of healthcare services.
Chair of Judges

The Awards judging process is overseen by the Chair of Judges, whose role is to take an overarching view of the entries and judging process and provide advice and feedback to the department, entrants and judges. The Chair of Judges will also help to arbitrate any conflicts or issues that may arise in relation to the judging over the course of the Awards program.
The Awards Secretariat is proud to announce the 2011 Chair of Judges is the Hon Rob Knowles AO, who brings to the role a wealth of experience in healthcare and knowledge of the Victorian Public Healthcare Awards.
Work of the judges
The judges use the Awards assessment criteria to score each entry. The Secretariat collates the judge’s score to arrive at an overall ranking. The judging panel for each Award meet by teleconference to discuss the rankings, discuss anomalies or tied results, and recommends the winners and finalists to the Premier of Victoria, the Minister for Health, the Minister for Mental Health and the Department of Health Secretary for endorsement.
It is generally expected that there will be only one winner for each Award although the judges may assign any number of Victorian Public Healthcare Awards according to the merit of the entries.
