Victorian ICD Coding Committee

Background

The Victorian ICD Coding Committee was formed in 1979 as an official Committee of the Victorian Health Authority, in association with the Victorian Medical Record Association (now HIMAA Victorian Branch). The Committee, chaired by a Health Information Manager of the Department of Health, comprises qualified coders selected by the Department. Meetings are held on a monthly basis and Special Interest Groups can designate an appropriate Committee member as their channel of communication to and from the Committee.

Terms of Reference

  • To consider ICD-10-AM and AR-DRG queries from Victorian coders.
  • To publish resolved coding queries on a quarterly basis.
  • To act as the point of review for disputed coding in the Department’s Audit process.
  • To contribute to the development of and support the Victorian implementation of the Australian Coding Standards.
  • To promote the accurate use of ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS by appropriate means.
  • To participate in revision processes of ICD-10-AM/ACHI/ACS.
  • To advise the Department on coder workforce and coder education issues.
  • To participate in revision processes of casemix systems
  • To assess the casemix funding implications of coding and consult the Victorian Advisory Committee on Casemix Data Integrity (VACCDI) on issues where applicable.
  • To liaise with the National Casemix and Classification Centre (NCCC), Australian Institute of Health & Welfare (AIHW), Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), other coding advisory bodies, coding education organisations, and other appropriate organisations in Australia.

Criteria for Membership

  • Hold an undergraduate qualification in Health Information Management or Medical Record Administration or post graduate qualification in clinical coding.
  • Have graduated at least three years ago.
