Clinical Coders and Health Information Managers

What are Clinical Coders and Health Information Managers?

Clinical Coders (CCs) and Health Information Managers (HIMs) are a vital part of Victoria's health information workforce (HIW). They work within both public and private hospitals. In Victoria, the HIW is responsible for managing the coded information that supports the $7.3 billion of funding provided annually to public health services. Victoria is currently experiencing a shortage of both CCs and HIMs, and work arising from Victoria's Health Information Workforce Strategy is aimed at addressing this. Some relevant Strategy initiatives are working towards:

  • Improving the supply and retention of the Health Information Manager (HIM) and Clinical Coder workforce (CC)
  • Improving the fit of the education solutions with the business needs of the workforce
  • Working towards the restructuring of the workforce model from the current flat, two tier model to a more pyramidal structure

For more information about what the work that CCs and HIMs do, what personal qualities and abilities they need, and where you can train to become a HIW professional, please see the attached documents.
