What is the Strategy?

Victoria has undertaken to develop a Health Information Workforce Strategy to provide strategic direction in order to address current health information workforce (HIW) shortages, to lessen the impact of future national reform on the HIW, and to meet future demands for a skilled and appropriate mix of HIW.

To address the issue of a skilled future health information workforce, a Health Information Workforce Strategic Framework was developed for Phase One of the Strategy project by the Health Information Workforce Working Group. The Strategic Framework was endorsed by the Department of Health, in early 2011.

The Strategic Framework includes initiatives aimed at:

  • Improving the supply and retention of the Health Information Manager (HIM) and Clinical Coder workforce (CC)
  • Improving the fit of the education solutions with the business needs of the workforce
  • Working towards the restructuring of the workforce model from the current flat, two tier model to a more pyramidal structure
  • Establish a Department of Health - Skills Victoria -Industry Advisory Group to ensure that the government and industry are kept abreast of emerging issues in relation to the health information workforce

Strategy Implementation Initiatives

Phase Two, the implementation phase of the Strategic Framework includes the following elements:

  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Establishment of an Industry Advisory Group
  • Development of Clinical Coding Alumni Strategy
  • Review training packages
  • Workforce sustainability
  • Technology innovations.
