2009-10 HACC data collection

Numbers:

  • Over 275,000 Victorians received a service from the HACC Program in 2009-10.

Age and sex:

  • 63 per cent of clients were aged 70-plus
  • 63 per cent were female.

Ethnicity and indigenous status:

  • 28 per cent of clients came from 85 nations classified as non English speaking countries.
  • One per cent of clients were Indigenous.

Use of HACC services by people born in non-English speaking countries:

Place of residence:

  • About 61 per cent of clients live in greater Melbourne.
  • Another 105,038 live in rural and regional Victoria.

Living arrangement:

  • 43 per cent of clients live alone.

Family carers:

  • 32 per cent of clients have a carer, typically a spouse or daughter; this is around 88,000 carers.

Services used:

  • Assessment is the service most commonly used with over 93,600 clients followed by Allied Health with over 89,000 clients and Domestic Assistance with over 87,300 clients.
  • Across all service types, average provision was just on 45.1 hours per person per annum.

Service mix:

  • 59 per cent of clients (163,268 people) received only one kind of HACC service.
  • Over 54,600 clients received two types of service.
  • About 5,800 clients received five or more services.

Source of referral:

  • 44 per cent of clients (or their families) made direct contact with HACC services (that is, self referral).
  • GPs referred more than 25,600 people to HACC.

Exit from HACC:

  • About 46 per cent of clients ceased receiving services because their condition had improved.
  • About 6 per cent of clients who stopped receiving HACC services moved into residential aged care.
