Genetic Services in Victoria

Genetics Services Strategy for Victoria 2005 - 2009

Overview

The Department of Human Services is responsible for a wide range of services to diverse client groups across Victoria. The principal function of the Department is to ensure the delivery of a range of health, housing and community services.

Recent further advances in genetics such as the mapping of the human genome, technology moving from the laboratory to the health care setting, and the general awareness of genetics in the public arena, will challenge medical and public health practitioners. Complex issues such as the need for population-based data balanced against the ethical concerns of obtaining consent for genetic research, the public health implications of screening for certain genetic conditions, the availability of and access to genetic services, have emerged.

Following an extensive consultation process, the Department has now released the Genetics Services Strategy for Victoria that sets the principles and directions to guide the planning, development and delivery of Victoria’s specialised genetics services over the next five years, 2005 to 2009. The Strategy aims to ensure Victoria is well equipped to meet emerging and future challenges and needs, and continues to provide high quality specialised services and to promote best use of available resources.
